Urban Cow Marathon

September 28, 2025

I definitely did not plan on spending my morning photographing the Urban Cow Half Marathon. The day actually started with me realizing I couldn’t leave my neighborhood because the streets nearby were completely blocked off for the marathon. At first, it was frustrating trying to figure out another way around the closures, but after watching runners pass by for a while, I decided to grab my camera and take advantage of the situation instead.

Once I got outside, I started noticing the energy and determination of everyone participating. Runners pushed through the course with focus and excitement while spectators lined the sidewalks cheering them on. As I walked around taking photos, I found myself getting more and more interested in documenting the atmosphere of the event and the people involved in it.

Some of my favorite moments came from the unexpected reactions I captured from runners along the course. With the help of a few volunteers, I was able to get people to smile, wave, and laugh as they ran past the camera. Those candid moments added so much personality to the photos and made the experience even more enjoyable.

What made the event even more meaningful was learning how the marathon supports local youth running programs, high school cross-country teams, and the American River Parkway Foundation. What started as an inconvenience turned into an opportunity to document a community event that brings people together while supporting important local programs throughout Sacramento.
